Government Departments and Agencies
The Cabinet Office has issued HMG's Security Policy Framework, SPF, which represents a new and innovative approach to protective security and risk management. The SPF outlines Mandatory Security Policy Requirements that Government Departments and Agencies must meet. Mandatory Requirement 45 requires that all Protectively Marked or otherwise sensitive information is destroyed in accordance with HMG Information Assurance Standard No 5 – Secure Sanitisation of Protectively Marked or Sensitive Information.
HMG Information Assurance Standard No 5, IA5, describes what level of physical destruction is required for Protectively Marked information at the various Impact Levels, IL. The table below gives a summary of these different levels of destruction.
IA5 describes three level of physical destruction:
Secure Sanitisation Level 1, SSL1, is for assets that are Protectively Marked "Unclassified – IL1" and "Protect – IL2". IA5 requires that IL1 & 2 assets are destroyed to Commercial Best Practice. The Governments Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure, CPNI, suggests that BS8470 is Commercial Best Practice. Euro Recycling's vehicle mounted industrial shredder can destroy computer hard drives and data tapes in line with BS8470 and in accordance with Information Assurance Standard No 5.
Secure Sanitisation Level 2, SSL2, is for assets that are Protectively Marked "Restricted – IL3" and "Confidential – IL4". IA5 requires that IL3 & 4 assets are degaussed to CESG's Lower Level and/or destroyed to Commercial Best Practice. Degaussing is usually only required if physical destruction is to be carried out offsite. As Euro Recycling offer an onsite physical destruction service degaussing is not necessary. Euro Recycling can therefore shred IL1 to IL4 asset to Commercial Best Practice i.e. BS8470 onsite and in accordance with Information Assurance Standard No 5.
Secure Sanitisation Level 3, SSL3, is for assets that are Protectively Marked "Secret – IL5" and "Top Secret – IL6". IA5 requires that IL5 & 6 assets are degaussed to CESG's Higher Level and destroyed to 6mm particles for magnetic media and 2mm particles for optical media. Once again degaussing is usually only required if physical destruction is to be carried out offsite and as Euro Recycling offer onsite physical destruction, degaussing is not necessary. Euro Recycling can therefore disintegrate IL5 to IL6 asset to 6mm and 2mm particles onsite and in accordance with Information Assurance Standard No 5.
Euro Recycling's drivers are cleared to National SC and our service is CESG approved having passed the CESG Claims Test Mark process.
